The Lowdown: Tokyo’s Beat Boss – King Power

Tokyo is a city that thrives on innovation, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of cutting-edge trends. Amid the neon lights in Roppongi, the city’s entertainment district, the Grand Hyatt stands out like a beacon. It’s here, within the quiet luxury of the Maduro, Bar & Jazz Lounge on the Hyatt’s 4th floor, that King Power can be found, rocking his Cuban-link gold chain, DITA shades, and trademark swirl of platinum dreads. This is King’s playground. His nightly ritual of fine cigars and drinks, chill beats and good company has taken over the space, making for some unforgettable evenings with special guests such as Kanye West, Floyd Mayweather, Kid Ink, The Game, and the Black Eyed Peas.Born in Nigeria, Jesse King, entrepreneur turned producer, musician, artist, and fashion designer, has lived in Japan for the last 20+ years. He’s become an integral part of Tokyo’s subculture, collaborating with renowned artists on their music and fashion designs, as well as dropping his own album earlier this year. The Playlist features King rapping about money, God, and love against the background of afro-beats and bling.

King's versatility and ability to blend different musical genres and cultural influences extend beyond the music world. His role as an ambassador and designer for DITA eyewear coincides with his own line of luxe streetwear and flashy jewelry, KQPP (King, Queen, Prince, Princess), which is set to launch this year, along with a side project–King’s custom line of Japanese sake. At the heart of King Power’s success is his larger-than-life persona–his infectious laugh weaves through every conversation. There’s no pretension, just a celebration of life and all it has brought. Guests stepping into Maduro Bar & Jazz Lounge will be welcomed into a world where music and fashion converge, with King Power acting as both guide and guru. The lounge is part of King’s commitment to creating spaces where people can come together, enjoy extraordinary performances, and party in peace. When he’s not producing music for himself or other artists at the King Power Entertainment Studios (a short walk from the Hyatt), the lounge’s intimate area is also the perfect atmosphere for broadcasting the King Power Podcast with guests coming from around the world to talk music, culture, and creativity.

“Anyone who wants to come and hang with us at the lounge, we’ve got everything,” King says. “We’ve got global cigars, cognac, Patrón, champagne, wine. You name it. I play with everything.” He laughs, and it’s impossible not to want to play too…to enter this man’s royal world of positive vibes, and deluxe lifestyles, and to stay awhile.
